Shelly Caprio*

Ms. Shelly Caprio is the Underwriting Manager at United Alternative Risk Insurance Solutions, LLC (UAR) located in Costa Mesa, Calif.  UAR specializes in developing and managing alternative risk financing options for their clients with a focus on group captive insurance companies.  Ms. Caprio’s primary responsibilities include program formation, underwriting, and ongoing program management.  In 2009, UAR made the strategic decision to create a group health benefits captive.  Ms. Caprio’s expertise is integral to the development and commencement of this new program.

 After graduating from Santa Clara University, Ms. Caprio began her insurance career with the California Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau.  She developed an expertise in workers’ compensation after working with the WCIRB and holding various underwriting and management positions for several workers’ compensation insurance companies.  Ms. Caprio moved into the brokerage business in 1999, working for Western Growers Insurance Services (WGIS).  At WGIS, she developed a captive insurance company for the members of the Western Growers Association and provided program management for the captive program.  Since 2007, Ms. Caprio has been instrumental in creating new alternative risk financing options to meet the needs of the clients of UAR.
